Middle class and social mobility
As a Moroccan think tank, the Amadeus Institute also focuses on the Kingdom’s social transformations over the past decade. The Institute analyzes this modernization, identifies factors shaping it, and proposes a course of action to overcome possible obstacles.
The emergence of a middle class is one of the signs of this ongoing modernization. But the mere existence of diverse and complex forms of middle class remains problematic for Morocco. The Institute first seeks to delineate the characteristics of this middle class, based on multiple criteria. The subsequent analyses provide action oriented recommendations to consolidate these emerging middle classes in Morocco.
Only when real social mobility is available to Moroccans will the creation of dynamic and innovative social strata be possible. Innovation and modernization will happen only when Moroccans can expect an improvement in their living standards. It is thus an imperative to lead a thorough analysis of the factors shaping social mobility and the obstacles hindering it in Morocco.
The Institute is committed to leading conferences and research programs on this fundamental question. In 2008, the Institute launched a series of workshops on the middle class dedicated to analyzing its implications with regards to health, education and vocational training, housing and consumption. The first white paper on the middle class and education was published in the spring 2010, and a roundtable conference was organized to increase public and private stakeholders’ awareness of this crucial issue.
